Bring your photo under 50 KB.
A 200 × 230 px JPG between 20 and 50 KB is the most common photo rule on Indian recruitment portals. The bank exams run by IBPS and SBI use it, and the list below shows every exam in our database with a photo cap near 50 KB.
For a photo of that pixel size, 50 KB is roomy. The trouble starts with a full phone photo: a 12 megapixel picture cannot fit in 50 KB at any sensible quality, so the compressor will also scale it down. If your form fixes the pixels as well, the 200 × 230 px page is the better fit, because it resizes first and then fills the 20 to 50 KB window.
A few boards use 50 KB for signatures too, with a floor of 30 KB. That floor is unusually high for a small signature image, which is why railway applicants often see "file too small" errors.

Tips for this size
- Set the target to 48 KB when the notice says "up to 50 KB". The railway signature rule stops at 49 KB, so a file at 49.5 KB fails there.
- Check the minimum as well as the maximum. A 50 KB photo cap usually comes with a 20 KB floor, and the railway signature cap comes with a 30 KB one.
- If the photo looks soft after compression, retake it rather than fighting the compressor. Daylight and a plain white wall compress far better than a patterned curtain in a dim room.
- SSC now captures the photo live inside most of its application forms. For those exams you only upload a signature, so there is no photo to compress.

- File size is only one of the checks. The photo also needs to be 200 × 230 px, in colour, with a light background. Get the pixels right first, then the size.
