Make a 75% face coverage photo

Quick answer

UPSC asks for a photo where your face covers about three quarters (75%) of the frame. Drop your photo below. The tool finds your face, crops the photo so the face fills about 75% of its height, tells you the share it measured, and saves a JPG inside the KB range. It runs in your browser and never uploads the photo.

How the face share is measured

We measure from the top of the head to the chin, as a share of the photo's height. A face-detection model finds the face on your device, and the tool estimates the top of the head from the face box, so read the number as "about". If the tool can't find a face, it says so and you frame the photo by hand with the guide.

Tips

  1. 1Start from a photo taken at arm's length or more, at eye level. A close selfie distorts the face, and cropping can't fix that.
  2. 2Keep your hair and both ears inside the frame. UPSC asks for both ears to be visible, so don't let the crop cut the sides of the head.
  3. 3If the face share reads above 85%, zoom out a little: the top of the hair or the chin may be cut off.
  4. 4Use a plain white wall. If the background check says grey, tap "Make the background white".
  5. 5Keep the original. If a portal rejects the photo, crop again from the original, not from the small file.

Frequently asked questions

What does 75% face coverage mean in the UPSC photo?
Your face should take up about three quarters of the photo, with little background or shoulder around it. We read it as the height from the top of your head to your chin being about 75% of the photo's height. A typical studio passport photo shows more shoulders than that.
Does this tool measure the face share or only show a guide?
It measures it. A face-detection model finds your face in the browser, and the tool shows the share as you move the crop box, for example "Face covers about 76% of the photo height". The dotted oval shows where the head should sit.
Which exams need 75% face coverage?
In our exam data, UPSC's notices for the Civil Services, NDA, CDS and ESE exams ask for about three quarters. NTA exams such as NEET UG, JEE Main and CUET UG ask for 80%. The table on this page lists each exam with its notice.
What size should the UPSC photo be?
Our UPSC data gives about 350 × 350 pixels and 20 to 200 KB, as a JPG on a plain white background. The tool sets those for you. Because the size is marked as approximate, you can change the pixels, and the tool tells you when you do.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Face detection, cropping and saving all happen in your browser, and the page sends nothing.
