Photo rejected in an exam form: what the notices say, and the fix

Quick answer

Photos get rejected for a short list of reasons, and the notices name them: the face is too small, the background isn't plain, the picture is dark or blurred, or you wore a cap or mask (or glasses, for SSC). NTA wants a recent passport photo with your face filling 80% of the frame, ears showing, on a white background, as a JPG of 10 to 200 KB. SSC takes the photo live through your camera and rejects any form where you photographed an old printed photo. Fix the cause before you fix the file size, and check the preview before you pay, because NTA says it won't give a correction facility for the photo later.

Is this your problem?

Use this kit if
  • The exam body has told you by email or SMS, or in your login, that your photo needs correcting. NTA says it sends photo and signature corrections this way. (Appendix-X (ix), p.109)
  • You are about to upload or capture a photo for NEET, JEE Main or an SSC exam and want it accepted the first time. (Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16; SSC CGL notice para 9.4, p.18)
Check first
  • Which kind of photo? NTA asks for a scanned passport photo and a live photo from your camera. SSC takes only the live photo; you don't upload a file at all. (Ch.3 (b), p.14 and (d)(xvii), pp.16-17; SSC CGL notice para 9.4, p.18)
  • Did you register with Aadhaar on ssc.gov.in? SSC says it won't reject those applications because the photo or signature misses the standard. (SSC CGL notice para 9.3, p.18)
  • Is a correction window still open? SSC gives 3 days after the closing date to correct and resubmit, for a fee. The last version you submit is the one that counts. (SSC CGL notice para 23(k), p.51)
Ask the exam body instead if
  • Your admit card or confirmation page already shows a wrong photo. For NEET, NTA asks you to call its helpline at once (10 AM to 5 PM) and sit the exam with the admit card you downloaded; it corrects the record later. (Ch.10 para 6, p.44)

When a photo can still be fixed

  1. 1Before you start
NEET 2026: photo taken after 01.01.2026; print 6-8 copies of the same one
  2. 2At upload
Read the preview: 80% face, ears, white background, sharp
  3. 3SSC, after closing date
    3-day correction window, with charges
  4. 4NTA, after submission
Photo problems sent by email/SMS, fixed in your login
  5. 5Exam day
The same photo goes on the attendance sheet
From the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin and the SSC CGL 2026 notice (Ch.3 (b), p.14; Ch.2 para 28, p.10; Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16; SSC CGL notice para 23(k), p.51; Appendix-X (ix), p.109; Ch.2 para 28, p.10).

The steps, in order

  1. 1

Read the reason before you touch the file

Have ready: The rejection email, SMS or login message, and the exam's notice.

A rejection for blur or a dark face is fixed by a new photo, not by resizing. A rejection for file size or format is fixed by resizing. (Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16; Ch.3 notes, p.17)

  2. 2

Take a new photo if the old one breaks a rule

Have ready: A white or light plain wall, daylight or a bright room, and someone to hold the phone at eye level.

Face the camera straight, no cap and no mask. NTA wants your ears to show. For SSC also take off your glasses; NTA allows spectacles only if you wear them every day. Don't use a Polaroid or a computer-made photo. (Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16 and notes, p.17; SSC CGL notice para 9.4(v), p.18)

  3. 3

Crop so your face fills about 80% of the frame

Have ready: The new photo on your phone or computer.

NTA asks that 80% of the image be your face. A full-body or half-body picture shrunk down fails this even when the KB size is right. (Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16)

Crop and resize the photo →
  4. 4

Clean up the background, if needed

    Have ready: The cropped photo.

NTA asks for a white background, and SSC lists a background that isn't plain as a main reason it rejects photos. If the wall behind you shows a pattern or a shadow, whiten it. (Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16; SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.3)

    Make the background white →
  5. 5

Save as JPG inside the exam's KB range

Have ready: The exam's photo spec (from its CorrectForm page or the notice).

NEET and JEE Main 2026 accept JPG or JPEG from 10 to 200 KB. Other exams use other ranges, so read the one for your exam. Don't save as PNG or HEIC. (Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16; JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin, p.4)

Bring the file into the KB range →
  6. 6

For a live photo, set up the room and retake

Have ready: A webcam or phone camera, good light and a plain background.

SSC: camera at eye level, face fully inside the marked area, neither too close nor too far. If the picture isn't right, recapture it. Never point the camera at a printed photo; SSC rejects every such form. NTA: light-coloured background, good lighting, 80% face with ears and no mask; the live photo is matched with your Aadhaar photo. (SSC CGL notice para 9.4-9.5, p.18 and para 23(o), p.51; NEET Ch.3 (d)(xvii)-(xviii), pp.16-17)

  7. 7

Check the preview against the list below, then submit

Have ready: The preview page and this kit's check sheet.

SSC asks you to check in the preview that the photo and signature meet every requirement before you submit. NTA says it won't give a correction facility for the photo later, so this check is the last easy chance. (SSC CGL notice para 9.11, p.19; NEET Ch.3 note, p.16)

Live photo or scanned photo: two different fixes

A scanned photo is a file you prepare. You can crop it, whiten the background and resize it before you upload, so most rejections are fixed on your own computer. (NEET Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16)

A live photo is taken by the form through your camera. No tool can fix it afterwards: you fix the room (light, background, camera height) and capture again. If NTA's live photo doesn't match your Aadhaar photo, or you verify identity some other way, NTA asks for a signed, attested certificate with a recent photo certified by your school principal or a Class-I Gazetted Officer (Annexure-VI). (NEET Ch.3 (d)(xvii)-(xviii), pp.16-17)

NEET and JEE Main ask for both. SSC exams use only the live photo, which is why our SSC pages have no photo resizer step. (NEET Ch.3 (b), p.14; JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin, p.4; SSC CGL notice para 9.4, p.18)

Edited or borrowed photos count as unfair means

NTA treats a fabricated photo (one that looks distorted, hand-made or computer-made) as unfair means and deals with the candidate under those rules. Someone else's photo cancels the candidature and can lead to criminal action. (NEET Ch.3 notes, p.17)

So don't edit your face. Crop, straighten, brighten slightly and whiten the background, and stop there. (NEET Ch.3 notes, p.17; Ch.14 para 1(o), p.49)

Why photos get rejected

Every line below is a reason the notices themselves give. Hold your photo up against each one.

  • The face is too small. NTA asks that 80% of the image be the face, with ears visible. (NEET Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16)
  • The background isn't plain. SSC names this first among the main reasons it rejects photos; NTA asks for white. (SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.3; NEET Ch.3 (d)(i), p.16)
  • The photo is dark or blurred. SSC lists "not sufficiently bright" and "blurred" among the main reasons, and its CGL notice rejects blurred, poor-quality, miniature and side-facing photos. (SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.3; SSC CGL notice Annexure-IV 1(a), p.71)
  • A cap, a mask, or (for SSC) glasses. SSC also lists photos taken without a shirt. (SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.3; SSC CGL notice para 9.4(v), p.18)
  • A photo of a photo. For SSC's live capture, any form where you photographed an existing printed photo is rejected. (SSC CGL notice para 9.5, p.18)
  • A Polaroid or a computer-generated photo, or an unclear one. NTA says such applications are liable to be rejected, and a form with no photo is rejected outright. (NEET Ch.3 notes, p.17)

Tips and tricks

  1. 1Stand about an arm's length from a white wall and face a window. Daylight from the front removes most shadows.
  2. 2Take five or six shots and pick the sharpest. Zoom in on the eyes; if they look soft, so will the upload.
  3. 3Crop before you compress. A tight crop keeps the face large and the file small at the same time.
  4. 4Print 6 to 8 copies of the exact photo you upload. NTA wants the same photo on the attendance sheet and later at counselling.
  5. 5If the live capture keeps failing on a laptop, use the QR code on the form to continue on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my photo rejected in the exam form?
The usual reasons the notices give are a small face, a background that isn't plain, a dark or blurred picture, or a cap, mask or (for SSC) glasses. SSC also rejects any form where the live capture was a photo of a printed photo (SSC instructions 15.08.2024; SSC CGL 2026 notice para 9.5).
What photo size does NEET or JEE Main accept?
A JPG or JPEG between 10 KB and 200 KB, with the face covering 80% of the image, ears visible, on a white background (NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin p.16; JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin p.4).
Can I wear glasses in the exam form photo?
For NTA exams, only if you wear them regularly (NEET 2026 bulletin p.17). For SSC's live photo, no: the notice asks you not to wear a cap, mask or spectacles (SSC CGL 2026 notice para 9.4).
Can I change my photo after submitting the form?
For SSC, during the 3-day correction window after the closing date, for a fee (CGL 2026 notice para 23(k)). NTA says it won't give a correction facility for the photo; if it finds a problem, it tells you by email or SMS and the fix appears in your login (NEET 2026 bulletin pp.16 and 109).
Will SSC reject my form if the photo is slightly off?
Not if you completed Aadhaar authentication at One-Time Registration. SSC says those applications won't be rejected on the ground that the photo or signature misses the standard (CGL 2026 notice para 9.3).
Is it OK to edit my photo with an app?
Cropping, resizing and a white background are fine. Don't change your face: NTA treats a de-shaped or computer-made photo as unfair means (NEET 2026 bulletin p.17).
