Signature rejected in an exam form: what the notices say, and the fix
SSC says the main reason it rejects signatures is that they are "miniature": a small signature lost in a big white box. Its CGL 2026 notice also rejects blurred signatures. The fix is to draw a box, sign inside it so the signature fills at least 80% of the box, crop to the box, and save a JPG of 10 to 20 KB. NTA (NEET UG, JEE Main) takes a clearly legible JPG of 10 to 100 KB and says it won't give a correction facility for it later. Check the signature in the preview before you submit.

Is this your problem?
- The exam body has told you your signature is not as per instructions, or you can still change it in the correction window. (para 23(k), p.51; NEET bulletin Appendix-X (ix), p.109)
- You are about to upload a signature for an SSC exam, NEET or JEE Main and want it accepted the first time. (para 9.6, p.18; NEET bulletin Ch.3 (d)(ii), p.16)
- Did you register with Aadhaar on ssc.gov.in? SSC says it won't reject those applications because the photo or signature misses the standard. (para 9.3, p.18)
- Which KB range? SSC wants 10 to 20 KB; NEET and JEE Main allow 10 to 100 KB. A file that passes NTA can fail SSC. (para 9.6, p.18; NEET bulletin Ch.3 (d)(ii), p.16; JEE (Main) bulletin, p.4)
- Is the SSC correction window open? It runs for 3 days after the closing date, for a fee, and your last submitted version is the valid one. (para 23(k), p.51)
- The correction window has closed. SSC says no change is allowed after that and it won't act on requests by post, fax, email or by hand. (para 23(l), p.51)

The steps, in order
- 1
Draw a box and sign inside it
Have ready: Plain white paper, a black pen, a ruler.
Draw a box about 6 cm wide and 2 cm high. SSC's advice is to cut the box out and sign inside it so the signature fills at least 80% of the box. Sign the way you normally do, larger than usual if your signature is small. (SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.1; para 9.6, p.18)
- 2
Photograph or scan it in good light
Have ready: A phone or scanner, and daylight or a bright lamp.
Hold the phone flat above the paper so the box isn't skewed, and keep it steady. SSC rejects blurred signatures and NTA wants a clearly legible one. (para 9.6, p.18; JEE (Main) bulletin, p.4)
- 3
Clean it to black on white
Have ready: The photo of the signature.
Remove grey shadows and paper texture so only the ink is left on a white background. (NEET bulletin Ch.3 (d)(ii), p.16)
Clean the signature → - 4
Crop tight to the box
Have ready: The cleaned image.
Cut away the white margin around the box. A wide margin is what makes a normal signature look miniature on the form. (SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.1; para 9.6, pp.18-19)
- 5
Save as JPG inside the exam's KB range
Have ready: Your exam's signature spec.
SSC: JPEG or JPG, 10 to 20 KB. NEET and JEE Main: JPG or JPEG, 10 to 100 KB. If the file is too big, lower the JPG quality or crop the margin; don't shrink the signature itself. (para 9.6, p.18; NEET bulletin Ch.3 (d)(ii), p.16; JEE (Main) bulletin, p.4)
Resize to the exam's KB range → - 6
Check the preview, then submit
Have ready: The preview page and this kit's check sheet.
SSC asks you to check in the preview that the photo and signature meet all its requirements. NTA says it won't give a correction facility for the signature later. (para 9.11, p.19; NEET bulletin Ch.3 note, p.16)
SSC's size: 6 cm or 4 cm?
The CGL 2026 notice gives two figures. The main text says the signature should be "about 6.0 cm (width) x 2.0 cm (height)"; the form instructions in Annexure-IV say "about 4.0 cm (Width) x 2.0 cm (Height)". (para 9.6, p.18; Annexure-IV 1(b), p.71)
Both say "about", and the KB range is the hard limit. Keep the file at 10 to 20 KB and the signature large and sharp inside the box. (para 9.6, p.18; Annexure-IV 1(b), p.71)
Only your own signature
NTA treats someone else's photo, signature or certificate in your form as unfair means, and so does uploading a wrong or morphed signature. (JEE (Main) bulletin, pp.4-5 and p.31)
NTA also won't issue an admit card for an application found incomplete, and it names unsigned applications as one example. (NEET bulletin Ch.10 note (e), p.44)
Why signatures get rejected
Every line below is a reason the notices themselves give. Check your file against each one.
- A miniature signature. SSC says this is the main reason it rejects signatures. (SSC instructions 15.08.2024, p.1)
- A blurred signature. The CGL notice rejects blurred or miniature signatures summarily. (para 9.6, pp.18-19; para 14.11, p.38; Annexure-IV item 24, p.73)
- A file outside the KB range or not a JPG. SSC asks for JPEG/JPG of 10 to 20 KB; NTA for JPG/JPEG of 10 to 100 KB. (para 9.6, p.18; NEET bulletin Ch.3 (d)(ii), p.16)
- A signature that isn't clearly legible. NTA asks for a clearly legible signature file. (JEE (Main) bulletin, p.4)
SSC, NTA, Aadhaar, scribes
| If you are | What changes |
|---|---|
| SSC exams | JPEG/JPG, 10 to 20 KB, about 6.0 x 2.0 cm (or 4.0 x 2.0 cm in Annexure-IV). Blurred or miniature signatures are rejected summarily. (para 9.6, p.18; Annexure-IV 1(b), p.71) |
| SSC with Aadhaar authentication | SSC won't reject the form because the photo or signature misses the standard. (para 9.3, p.18) |
| SSC, visually impaired (PwD-VH) candidates | A thumb impression is also allowed in place of the signature. (Annexure-IV 1(b), p.71) |
| NEET UG, JEE Main (NTA) | JPG/JPEG, 10 to 100 KB, clearly legible. If you use a scribe in NEET, the scribe's signature is also 10 to 100 KB. (NEET bulletin Ch.3 (d)(ii), (xii), p.16; JEE (Main) bulletin, p.4) |

Tips and tricks
- 1Use a black gel or ball pen, not pencil or a light blue pen. Dark ink survives JPG compression better.
- 2Sign three or four times and keep the clearest one.
- 3If the file is under 10 KB, don't stretch it. Retake the photo closer and in better light.
- 4Keep one signature file and use it for every form this year, so your signature looks the same everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
- Why was my signature rejected in the SSC form?
- SSC says the main reason is a "miniature" signature, small inside a large white area. Its CGL 2026 notice also rejects blurred signatures (SSC instructions 15.08.2024 p.1; CGL 2026 notice para 9.6).
- What signature size does SSC accept?
- A JPEG/JPG of 10 to 20 KB, about 6.0 cm wide and 2.0 cm high (CGL 2026 notice para 9.6; the form instructions in Annexure-IV say about 4.0 x 2.0 cm).
- What signature size does NEET or JEE Main accept?
- A clearly legible JPG/JPEG between 10 KB and 100 KB (NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin p.16; JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin p.4).
- Can I change my signature after submitting the form?
- For SSC, during the 3-day correction window after the closing date, for a fee; after that, no change is allowed (CGL 2026 notice para 23(k)-(l)). NTA says it won't give a correction facility for the signature.
