Photo size should be between 20 KB and 50 KB: how to fix it

Quick answer

Your photo is either over 50 KB or under 20 KB. Select your exam, drop the photo, and the tool resizes it to the exam's pixels and keeps the file inside 20 to 50 KB. If a clean JPG still lands under 20 KB, it pads the file to just over the minimum.

The tool runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Updated 24 October 2026.

What "Photo size should be between 20 KB and 50 KB" means

A 20 to 50 KB JPG is the most common photo rule in our exam data. The bank and insurance recruitment forms (IBPS, SBI, RBI, LIC, NICL) use it with a 200 x 230 pixel photo, and TNPSC Group IV uses it at 130 x 170.

Over 50 KB usually means a full phone photo, which is several MB. Under 20 KB usually means the photo was squeezed for another form, or the face fills only a small part of a plain background.

Why it happens

  • You uploaded the phone photo itself, which is far over 50 KB.
  • The photo was compressed for a form with a lower limit and went under 20 KB.
  • It was saved as PNG or as a screenshot instead of a JPG.
  • The photo was resized to the right pixels but saved at a quality setting that pushed it outside the window.

Tips

  • Stand against a plain light wall in daylight. A busy background takes bytes away from your face.
  • Keep colour on for the photo. Black and white is for documents, and some notices ask for a colour photo.
  • If the result is near 50 KB, that is fine. The tool keeps the file at or under 50,000 bytes, which passes both ways of counting a kilobyte.
  • IBPS and SBI forms also ask for a live photo taken in the form. Keep the same look as in the uploaded photo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my photo is too big or too small?
Look at the file details on your phone or computer. Anything above 50 KB is too big and anything under 20 KB is too small. The tool shows the final size in KB under the preview.
Can I just crop the photo to make it smaller?
Cropping changes the pixel size, and these forms fix it (200 x 230 on bank forms). Resize to the exam's pixels first and compress after, which is what the tool does.
Is it all right to pad the file to reach the minimum?
The padding is a comment block inside the JPG. Image viewers skip it, so the picture is exactly the same; only the byte count goes up. If your notice tells you a different way to reach the minimum, such as a larger pixel size, do what the notice says.
Is my photo or signature uploaded to your server?
No. The resizing runs in your browser on your own phone or computer. The file is never sent anywhere, and closing the tab removes it.
