File size exceeds the maximum limit: how to fix it

Quick answer

Your photo or signature is bigger in KB than the form allows. Choose your exam and the document in the tool, then drop the file. It comes back at the exam's pixel size and under its KB limit. To get there, the tool picks the highest JPG quality that fits instead of shrinking your face or your signature.

The tool runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Updated 28 October 2026.

What "File size exceeds the maximum limit" means

Every form sets a ceiling in KB. In our exam data the photo limit is 50 KB on the bank and insurance forms, 100 KB on the railway (RRB) forms and 200 KB on UPSC and on NTA forms such as NEET UG and JEE Main. A photo straight from a phone camera is usually a few MB, which is many times any of these.

File size depends on the pixel count and on how hard the JPG is compressed. Bring the pixels down to what the notice asks for first, then compress. If you squeeze a 4,000 pixel photo until it fits, it usually turns blurry, and notices list a blurred photo as a reason to reject it.

Why it happens

  • You picked the photo straight from the camera or the gallery at full resolution.
  • The file was resized to the right pixels but saved at top JPG quality, so it stayed heavy.
  • The signature was scanned at 300 or 600 dpi, so even a small signature came out large.
  • The file looks fine on your computer but is a few hundred bytes over. Windows counts 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, and the portal may count 1,000.

Tips

  • Compress the original, not a copy you already compressed. Every time a JPG is saved again it gets a little softer.
  • Crop away empty background or blank paper before you shrink. The tool's crop keeps the exam's shape, and less area means fewer bytes at the same sharpness.
  • Aim a little under the limit, say 45 to 48 KB on a 50 KB form, so the file passes whichever way the portal counts a kilobyte.
  • Check the signature limit on its own. On the bank forms it is 20 KB, far less than the photo.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo turn blurry when I compress it to 50 KB?
Usually it still has thousands of pixels. Bring it down to the exam's pixel size first, such as 200 x 230 on bank forms, and a 50 KB JPG looks sharp. The tool resizes first and compresses after.
My file shows 50 KB and the form still says it is too big. Why?
Your computer may count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, so a file it shows as 50 KB holds 51,200 bytes, and a portal that counts 1,000 bytes to the KB reads that as 51.2 KB. The tool keeps the file at or under 50,000 bytes, so it passes either way.
Is my photo or signature uploaded to your server?
No. The resizing runs in your browser on your own phone or computer. The file is never sent anywhere, and closing the tab removes it.
