UPSC asks for two photos. First, upload a passport photo in the Common Application Form: JPG, plain white background, face covering about three quarters of the frame, head centred, both ears visible, and not signed. Then capture a live photo by webcam or phone. UPSC matches it to the uploaded photo, and a mismatch blocks the application. The ESE 2027 notice allows 20 to 300 KB, but UPSC's photo instructions cap the photo at 200 KB, so a file between 20 and 200 KB meets both. Resize the uploaded photo here; you take the live photo in the portal.

Sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on plain white paper, and scan all three signatures as one JPG image. UPSC's upload instructions ask for 20 to 100 KB and 350 to 500 pixels. The notice's appendix allows up to 300 KB, so a file of 20 to 100 KB is safe either way. Use paper without lines or colour, and upload the image the right way up.

About the UPSC ESE application form

The UPSC Engineering Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The online application portal has strict requirements for photo and signature uploads — images outside the specified dimensions or file size are automatically rejected.

For the photograph, you need a colour image of about 350×350 pixels with file size between 20 KB and 200 KB, saved in JPG format with a white background. The signature should be about 350×350 pixels and between 20 and 100 KB.

Common reasons UPSC ESE forms get rejected

  • ·File size over 200 KB (most common — phone photos are often 2–5 MB).
  • ·Dimensions far from about 350×350 pixels.
  • ·Coloured or patterned background — the form asks for a plain white background.
  • ·Wrong file format. The notice asks for JPG.
  • ·Signature on lined or coloured paper instead of plain white.
