Compress to X KB

Compress a JPG or PDF to the KB limit on your form.

Quick answer

Type the limit from your notice, drop a photo or a PDF, and press Compress. The tool lowers the JPG quality first and shrinks the image only when it must, so the file lands just under the limit. If a PDF cannot get under it and stay readable, the tool says so instead of handing you a blurred page.

Exam and scholarship portals put a KB cap on almost every upload: the photo, the signature, the marksheet, the caste or disability certificate. The caps run from 10 KB for a signature to 1 MB for a long document, and the portal refuses a file that is even a few bytes over.

This page does three jobs with one size box. A photo or scan becomes a JPG under the limit. A PDF is first saved again without changes to its pages, which keeps the text selectable; if that is not enough, every page is redrawn as an image at a lower resolution. Several photos of a certificate can also go into one A4 PDF under the limit.

The tool runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Updated 19 October 2026.

KB

The file will be at most 1,00,000 bytes, so it passes a 100 KB limit whether the portal counts 1 KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

How to use it

  1. Pick what you have: a photo or scan (JPG out), a PDF, or several photos to join into one PDF.
  2. Set the maximum file size to the size your form allows. Use the number printed in your notice.
  3. Turn on black and white for a printed certificate or marksheet. Leave it off for your own photo.
  4. Drop the file and press Compress. The tool tries a lower JPG quality first and makes the image smaller only if it has to.
  5. Check the result: the size in KB and bytes, the pixels or pages, and whether the text still reads. Then download it.

Portals with this limit

These are some of the PDF limits in this cycle's official notices. Your own notice may give a different number, so use that one.

Read from the official documents linked above on 30 September 2026. Limits change between cycles, so check the notice for the year you are applying in.

Tips

  • Copy the limit from the notice, not from a coaching site. The same exam can change its limit between years.
  • Look at the minimum too. Bank photos must be at least 20 KB and NTA certificate PDFs at least 50 KB, and a file that is too small is rejected just like one that is too big.
  • Crop before you compress. The table, bedsheet or shadow around a page takes bytes that the text needs.
  • Compress the original scan, not a file you already compressed. Each round of JPG compression adds blur.
  • If the form fixes the pixel size as well as the KB, use the photo resizer instead. It resizes to the exact pixels first.

Other sizes

Need exact pixels as well as KB? Use the photo and signature resizer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress a PDF to an exact KB size?
You can get it under a size, not to an exact byte count. The tool aims just under your limit. A scanned PDF almost always fits; a long PDF full of colour photos may not fit under a very small limit, and the tool tells you the smallest size it could reach.
Will the text in my PDF still be selectable?
Only if the PDF fits after the first step, a plain re-save. If the pages have to be redrawn, each page becomes an image and the text can no longer be selected or searched. Portals check the size and whether the page can be read, so that does not affect the upload.
Does a PNG stay a PNG?
No. The tool saves photos and scans as JPG, because JPG gets far smaller than PNG for photos and nearly every exam portal asks for JPG. Transparent areas are filled with white.
Is my file uploaded to your server?
No. The compressing happens in your browser on your own phone or computer. The file is never sent anywhere, and closing the tab removes it.
Why is my file a little under the number I typed?
Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024. The tool keeps the file under the 1,000-byte reading, so a 20 KB file here is at most 20,000 bytes and passes either check.
