UPSC asks for two photos in the Common Application Form. First, upload a scanned passport photo on a plain white background as a JPG. Then take a live photo with your webcam or phone in the form itself; the notice asks for both to be clear. The Geo-Scientist 2027 notice prints no file size and points to the portal's instructions. The form is the same for every UPSC exam, and the CAPF (ACs) 2026 notice gives its limits: 20 to 200 KB for the photo. Applications for 2027 closed on 22 September 2026; the preliminary exam is on 10 January 2027.

Sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on plain white paper, and scan the page as one JPG. The CAPF (ACs) 2026 notice sets 20 to 100 KB for the signature file in the same form; the ESE 2027 notice allows up to 300 KB, so 20 to 100 KB meets both. All three signatures need to be clear and easy to read.
“Applicants are required to upload their photograph and also capture their live photograph while filling up the Common Application Form (CAF).”

About the UPSC Geo-Scientist application form
The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The online application portal has strict requirements for photo and signature uploads — images outside the specified dimensions or file size are automatically rejected.
For the photograph, you need a colour image of about 350×350 pixels with file size between 20 KB and 200 KB, saved in JPG format with a white background. The signature should be about 350×350 pixels and between 20 and 100 KB.
Common reasons UPSC Geo-Scientist forms get rejected
- File size over 200 KB (most common — phone photos are often 2–5 MB).
- Dimensions far from about 350×350 pixels.
- Coloured or patterned background — the form asks for a plain white background.
- Wrong file format. The notice asks for JPG.
- Signature on lined or coloured paper instead of plain white.
Tips and tricks for the UPSC Geo-Scientist upload
- 1UPSC asks for two photos: a scanned passport photo you upload on a plain white background and a live photo you take in the form. Take both on the same day so they look alike.
- 2Sign three times on plain white paper in black ink, one below the other, and scan the whole page as one JPG.
- 3Keep the photo between 20 and 200 KB and the signature between 20 and 100 KB. Those limits come from the CAPF (ACs) 2026 notice for the same UPSC form, and they also fit the ESE 2027 notice.
- 4The Geo-Scientist notice warns that uploading the wrong photo or signature in place of your own can lead to action by the Commission. Check the preview before you submit.
