20 KB target

Compress a signature or photo to under 20 KB.

Quick answer

Set 20 KB, drop the JPG and press Compress. A signature cropped close to the ink fits under 20 KB with no visible loss. The file is kept at or under 20,000 bytes, so it passes whether the portal counts a kilobyte as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

20 KB is the signature ceiling on the bank and SSC forms in our exam data, and the floor for bank photos. The lists below come from that data, so they change when a notice changes.

A phone photo of a signature is often 1 to 3 MB. The tool cuts the JPG quality first, then scales the image down only as far as it has to, and shows you the pixel size it ended at.

The tool runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Updated 19 October 2026.

KB

The file will be at most 20,000 bytes, so it passes a 20 KB limit whether the portal counts 1 KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

How to use it

  1. Pick what you have: a photo or scan (JPG out), a PDF, or several photos to join into one PDF.
  2. Set the maximum file size to 20 KB. Use the number printed in your notice.
  3. Turn on black and white for a printed certificate or marksheet. Leave it off for your own photo.
  4. Drop the file and press Compress. The tool tries a lower JPG quality first and makes the image smaller only if it has to.
  5. Check the result: the size in KB and bytes, the pixels or pages, and whether the text still reads. Then download it.

Exams with a limit at this size

Signature capped at 20 KB

Photo must be at least 20 KB

For these photos 20 KB is the minimum, so stay comfortably above it.

From each exam's latest notification in our data. When the form also fixes the pixel size, the exam page has a resizer set to both.

Tips

  • Crop to the ink before you compress. White paper around a signature still costs bytes.
  • Turn on black and white for a signature. Black ink on white paper looks the same and the file gets much smaller.
  • Do not take a bank photo down to 20 KB. Those forms want a photo of at least 20 KB, so use the 50 KB page for photos.
  • If the form also fixes the signature at 140 x 60 pixels, the signature resizer does the pixels and the KB in one pass.

Other sizes

Need exact pixels as well as KB? Use the photo and signature resizer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the portal reject my 20 KB signature?
Usually the file is a few hundred bytes over because the portal counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. This tool already keeps the file under 20,000 bytes. If it still fails, check the minimum: many signature fields need at least 10 KB.
Can a passport photo be under 20 KB?
Yes at a small pixel size such as 200 x 230, but most bank forms want the photo between 20 and 50 KB. Check your notice before you go that low.
Is my file uploaded to your server?
No. The compressing happens in your browser on your own phone or computer. The file is never sent anywhere, and closing the tab removes it.
Why is my file a little under the number I typed?
Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024. The tool keeps the file under the 1,000-byte reading, so a 20 KB file here is at most 20,000 bytes and passes either check.
