Lost your admit card or marksheet? Write the police report

Quick answer

Report the loss to the police station of the area where you lost it, or use your state's online lost report if it has one (Delhi, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh do). Fill in the form below and the letter appears in English, Hindi or Bengali, ready to print. Keep the copy the police give back: boards and offices often ask for a police report before they issue a duplicate. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Our draft letter. No police force prints an official format for this, so the wording is ours. What goes into it comes from the sources at the end of the page.

This is a format, not legal advice. The police station has the final word on what it accepts.

Online or on paper: check your state

What to do, step by step

  1. Fill in the form. Write the roll number and year exactly as they appear on your other papers.
  2. If your state has an online report, use it and save the report it gives you. In Delhi the report has an LR number; you can use it later to find the report again.
  3. If not, print the letter, sign it and take it to the police station with a second copy.
  4. Ask the station to stamp or sign your copy, and keep it with your application papers.
  5. Then apply to the board or exam body for the duplicate. CBSE takes duplicate applications online through its DADS portal.

Tips

  • Don't report a theft as a loss. Delhi Police say their online lost report is not for things lost in a crime; for those, go to the nearest police station.
  • Be accurate. Delhi Police warn that a false report to the police is a punishable offence.
  • Delhi Police keep a lost report on file for reference and do not investigate it.
  • Keep a scan of the stamped copy as well as the paper, in case you have to send it again.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an FIR for a lost marksheet?
For a plain loss, Delhi Police take a lost report, which is information only: they don't investigate it. If the marksheet was stolen, that is a crime, and Delhi Police say their online service isn't for it. Go to the nearest police station.
Will a board accept the Delhi online lost report?
Delhi Police say yes: the report is digitally signed, and the authority that reissues the document can verify it online.
I lost my admit card outside Delhi. Can I use the Delhi online report?
No. Delhi Police say the online lost report is only for things lost in Delhi. Use your own state's route or the letter on this page.
Can I get a duplicate CBSE marksheet online?
Yes. CBSE's DADS portal takes applications for duplicate marksheets, pass certificates and migration certificates, as a digital copy or a printed one sent by speed post.
Does this page keep what I type?
No. The letter is built in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
